How Reflection Treatment Helps to Overcome Addiction

Reflection treatment is a necessary process because it enables those in recovery to think about themselves and their past to help figure out the reasons behind their addiction, and the ways they could follow to achieve sobriety.
Reflection refers to an inner awareness that we gain as we spend some time alone to understand ourselves a little better. Personal reflection helps to unveil addiction, motivation, and pain when we ask ourselves questions on how they affect us. It includes mindfulness of our behaviors, actions, thoughts via meditation, personal honesty, or talking to friends and professionals.

Reflective Writing

It is a form of self-awareness practice that is used during the treatment as well as post-treatment. A person engages deep with himself and writes about personal likes and dislikes or any other thought.
Examples of personal questions that a person has to ask himself include:
·       What are my strengths?
·       What makes me unique?
·       What makes me happy or unhappy?
·       Am I pleasing others or myself?
·       What aspects of myself should I improve?
·       Am I hurting others or myself? (If so, how?)
·       What are my goals?

Self-Awareness and Reflection

Self-awareness arises when we reflect on our weaknesses and strengths. Reflection creates self-honesty, gives an opportunity to embrace our best qualities, which otherwise is hidden as a shadow.
By accepting our positive and negative truths, a person understands how we function on a core level. Our hidden side may include emotions like anger, shame, jealousy, insecurity, or guilt, which may be part of one’s addiction. Witnessing this part of ourselves with compassion ignites a feeling of acceptance that we have grown into a healthy space, which ultimately causes healing. It is a pathway to transformation, which helps to understand life and our own selves in a better way.

Understanding Our Reactions through Reflection

When we understand our pain, we can control the way we react to the situations. We can practice to reduce the sources of stress in our lives and feel motivated to make a change for a better lifestyle. This also allows us to network with people around us as we relate to how others behave.

Lack of Self-Reflection

A Lack of self-reflection results in internal and external conflict. If we don’t try to understand ourselves, we could never have the ability to achieve core change. Would we know where to start? Would we understand which areas need the most healing? We would always stay stuck and our relationships may suffer too.
